Codes change. Your certification must keep up.
If you’ve spent more than a week designing, installing or inspecting fire alarm systems, you already know the code never sits still. NFPA 72 gets a new edition every three years. Each one brings new requirements, and each one shows up on the job before most people have finished reading the last one. And NICET has announced that the Fire Alarm Systems exams will be updated in mid-2027 (with the actual date to be determined).
So it’s fair to ask: How does NICET decide what goes on the Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) exams? And what does an update mean for you if your recertification date is coming up?
Here’s the short answer: NICET’s current FAS exams are based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 72. NICET has started its scheduled update and maintenance of the FAS program, and new exams based on the 2025 edition are expected in 2027. Whether this is your first experience with NFPA updates, or you’ve been through it 10 times, let’s walk through how that process works and how to plan around it.
How often does NICET update the Fire Alarm Systems exam?
NICET updates its FAS program on a scheduled maintenance cycle that tracks industry and code changes. It doesn’t chase every new NFPA 72 edition the day it’s published. Instead, it runs a full review, then moves the exams to a current edition all at once.
The last cycle shows how this works. NICET finished its Job Task Review for fire alarm in December 2022 and chose to skip the 2019 editions entirely, going straight to 2022. In March 2024, NICET launched the new exams. They reference the 2022 edition of NFPA 72, the 2020 edition of NFPA 70 and the 2021 edition of NFPA 101.
The next cycle is already underway, with the move to the 2025 edition of NFPA 72 expected around mid-2027. NICET hasn’t set an exact date yet.
How NICET gathers input from the field
NICET exams aren’t written in a vacuum. They’re built by working fire alarm professionals, called subject matter experts (SMEs), alongside NICET staff.
Each cycle starts with a job task analysis. SMEs document the tasks certified technicians actually perform, plus the knowledge and skills each task requires, sorted by level. NICET then validates that work in two rounds: open-ended feedback from select practitioners, then a structured survey sent to a larger group of technicians. The results are analyzed statistically to confirm the exam reflects real work in the field.
Want a seat at the table? Experienced FAS professionals can volunteer as a NICET SME and earn CPD points for their time.
How exam changes are made and approved
Once the job task analysis is validated, NICET moves through a set sequence:
- Approval. NICET’s Board of Governors approves the job task report.
- Blueprint. A specialized group sets how many questions cover each topic, finalizes reference materials and confirms work experience requirements for each level.
- Item development. SMEs write, edit and review questions, then approve them level by level.
- Standard setting. SMEs use a standard set of methods and criteria to recommend the passing score for each level.
- Publication. New exams, content outlines and practice tests go live.
NICET’s goal is to develop exams that are valid, reliable, fair and legally defensible. To keep things fair, anyone who develops training tied to an exam can’t help write or score that exam for two years.
What this means if you’re renewing your NICET certification
Good news first: An exam update doesn’t erase the certification you’ve already earned. NICET certifications are recertified every three years through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), not by default retesting on the newest code.
Here’s how the 90 CPD points typically add up:
- Active Practitioner: Up to 72 points if you work full time at the same responsibility level or higher.
- Additional Education: Up to 72 points, at one point per hour of training, including online courses, and in-person training.
- Advanced Profession: Up to 45 points, including volunteer activity and for-hire work.
- Certification Activity: Up to 90 points, including upgrading your certification or achieving certification in a related practice area.
- Special Recertification exam: 45 points for retaking and passing the exam for the level you hold.
Submit within six months of your expiration date, and earlier is better.
The code update still matters, though. Here’s how to plan:
- Upgrading before mid-2027? You’ll test on the 2022 edition. Check the current FAS content outlines.
- Upgrading after the switch? Start learning the 2025 NFPA 72 changes now.
- Just renewing? Use your 18 education points on training that covers what’s changing. You’ll need it on the job either way.

How Fire Tech responds when NICET updates an exam
When NICET announces an exam update, Fire Tech starts the process of updating our courses right away.
Our team reviews NICET’s new content outlines, general references and “What to Expect” guidance to see exactly what’s changing. Then we decide whether our instructors can update a course in-house or whether to bring in outside subject matter experts. From there, we revise lesson modules and quizzes to match the new code edition.
Every course then goes through a multi-step quality review: expert review, correction and confirmation, and a final walk-through as a learner. That way, the course you take lines up with the exam you’ll sit for. Ready to start preparing for your NICET exam?

Frequently asked questions
What edition of NFPA 72 is on the NICET Fire Alarm Systems exam?
The current FAS exams are based on the 2022 edition of NFPA 72. NICET expects to update them to the 2025 edition around mid-2027.
How many CPD points do I need to recertify with NICET?
You need 90 CPD points every three years. Most come from Active Practitioner work (up to 72) and additional education (up to 72).
Do I have to retake my exam when NICET updates it?
Typically not. If a person is already NICET certified, they must obtain at least 90 total CPD points over a three-year period prior to their certification expiration. If they do not obtain the 90 CPD points, they can take a recertification exam. It is a 3-hour exam and must be taken and passed in advance of the certification period expiration date to receive the 45 points.
Who writes the NICET exam questions?
Subject matter experts from the fire alarm industry write and review questions, working with NICET staff.
