What signage do you see on the systems you are inspecting? There is a list of signs that we should see when we show up for our inspection. These would include:
- Control valve
- Main drain
- Fire Department connection
- Inspectors test
- Auxiliary drain
- Hydraulic Design information signs
- Antifreeze system signs
- And more
In NFPA 13 2007, the General Information Sign was introduced to the standard and became a requirement. Per NFPA 13 2022 in Chapter 29 – Systems Acceptance – 29.6 * General Information Sign. 29.6.1, the installing contractor shall provide a general information sign used to determine system design basis and information relevant to the inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements required by NFPA 25. Why is this important? Note what the handbook tell us – “By installing a sign at the system riser that specifies the details on which the original design was based, the original main drain test results, and the locations of auxiliary systems and/or drain connections, the information remains available for future inspection, testing, and maintenance of the system.” The General Information Sign helps us as inspectors to know what we are inspecting and how we are to do the inspection.
